User is in the accounting software 3rd party application and goes to send an invoice via email. The program creates the message and if Outlook is open, fails to send. If Outlook is closed, the message pops up as it should, but of course won’t send until Outlook is open again otherwise it just sits in the outbox.

User is in Microsoft Excel and goes to share the document via email. If Outlook is opened, the send fails and an error message pops up telling the user to close and re-open outlook. If Outlook is closed, no problem. Message is created but user needs to open Outlook to send it.

I have seen something similar awhile ago but it was office and I wonder if they MS ever fixed it. In a bit OS with 32 bit install of Office the right click and “send to email” function pooped out but if you saved the file, opened a new email and attached everything would be golden. Opening Excel, creating a new spreadsheet and just typing in a few lines of garbage, then going through aforementioned process works just fine. IF the export of the data from the accounting program is NOT SAVED, and just the excel spreadsheet is shared without a reference file to go with it , the problem occurs.

Yes, updates were applied Patch Tuesday. I guess uninstall them and beta test the patches, find out which one is the culprit oddly it will not be an MS Office update. Are there two versions of Outlook installed on the PC in question?

Our financial software was being run with elevated priviledges for compatibility reasons, so this spawned Excel in the same security context “Run As Administrator”. Outlook was being run in the users regular security context and this broke the communication between the two. When Outlook is not running Excel spawns Outlook in an elevated context so works as expected.

Whilst it’s not an ideal solution security wise running Outlook in the elevated context has resolved the issue for us. We’ve explained the problems with this to our user and she will be extra diligent. I have a similar issue with a user and may have found a fix for it. No guarantees though as it’s a recent fix and I’m still letting it burn in. Setup: User with Office 32 bit on Win7 64 system. She has an accounting app that generates a report in Excel format, then tries to send it from Excel.

I’ve rolled out this fix to a couple of other users who were also having that issue and, so far, it’s taken care of it for them.
