Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. You may have to scroll down to find your language. The text and video on this link compare the 2 types of installation in terms of bandwidth and disk space used. They are very close. Thanks Doug and Rohn for the replies. Not sure what you mean by or local install. I just need to download the file if possible and save it on an external drive and after the Refresh, I’ll have it there without trying to download it forever on the slow network back home.
As I understand you would like to re-install the Office on the same PC and would like to order for the backup media. You may also refer the following link for more information:. I hope this information will help you in installing the Office. The reason I would like to download it now is because the Internet Speed is that much faster where I am presently at than it will be when I get back home later on.
I plan to refresh the laptop only then but instead of downloading it there which takes for ever, I want to download it now. Thank you for the directions as how to get it. Win 8 has refined your backup and restore options. Before Win 8 you could create an Image Copy backup of the full drive or selected directories , but it was hard to separate backups of the OS, Applications and personal Data unless you created a separate data partition.
I still think it is a good option. Personally, I think they missed a valuable selling point by not mentioning RecImg. EXE in conjunction with Refresh. A less than desirable outcome but an appropriate reaction to a bad malware infection. Refresh is roughly equivalent to an image copy backup. A Reset will restore a backup of the OS and Metro applications.
But there is still that issue of wiping out your installed desktop applications. EXE is a backup tool that ships with Windows 8. However, using RecImg. EXE you can create new images that will include recently installed desktop applications.
EXE command line tool and backup files. File History is a new Win 8 feature. File History continuously monitors files stored in Libraries, Desktop, Contacts, and Favorites folders. It runs on a predetermined schedule, and when it detects changes in any file, it makes a backup of that file to an External drive. What if something goes wrong in File History? Most consumer electronics devices today can be reset to some factory state, and so we built this capability into Windows 8 too.
Create a Windows 8 image with recimg. New free imaging software — for Windows 8! Thank you again for these pointers. I think by the time I got reading through all this material, I’ll be too old to use computers!!! Since there is no way to edit, the info here is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too overwhelming.
Again, the reason for doing this is to download it here because of the super high speed instead of doing it for hours at home. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. My question is, since I’m presently in an area where we have very fast high speed, is there a way for me to re-download the product so I can copy it over to an external HD and have it ready to put on the Laptop after the Refresh?

In reply to Rohn’s post on August 12, In reply to Lumbergumrubber’s post on August 12, MS has split Office into 2 different installation methods, and product bundles.
The functionality of the Office programs is the same. Office “local” install is the “traditional” method of installing on computers. The retail license of Office has been “improved” to allow you to install it on only one computer at a time compared to 2 or 3 for earlier versions.
The Office programs do not install directly on your computer. Instead, a “virtual computer” called “click to Run” is installed on your computer, and the Office programs are installed inside of it. You have very little control over the way that programs are installed inside of CTR.
MS handles all of the “windows updates”. The easiest way to tell the difference from local install is that most consumer licenses allow install on up to 5 computers at the same time. Office comes in approximately a kb installer file. It installs the CTR and program stubs that are enough to start each program.
When you start a program, or use a new program feature for the first time Office downloads the required program code from the internet. Some people have said that the “local install’ file and and local install “backup disk” disk are also coming in internet downloading setups.
I have not seen this myself. If the file is less the 3GB in size it is NOT a full local installer, instead it will rely on online downloads.
Guruprasad Ra. Hi Lumbergumrubber, As I understand you would like to re-install the Office on the same PC and would like to order for the backup media. Thank you for the info and instruction! In reply to Guruprasad Ra’s post on August 12, Off Topic sorta The new Windows 8 “refresh” function is handy.
It is even more handy if you learn about a complementary function that MS forgot to mention, ” RecImg. EXE “. Refresh wipes out “desktop” applications when you use it. But using RecImg. EXE after installing a desktop application will prevent Refresh from wiping it out the next time.
Here are some links about all of Win8’s backup functionality. File History — Protect Personal Files. Update Refresh using RecImg. Please – just a line to show me how to do this.
